Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, has suggested that the United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping can jointly secure the Nobel Peace Prize if both world powers find common ground on foundational AI safety rules.
In an interview published a day ahead of the state dinner on September 24, Altman stated the urgent need for cross-border alignment and characterised basic safety accords as a reachable diplomatic milestone that requires international recognition.
He said in an interview with Fortune Magazine, ‘I think Presidents Trump and Xi would get the Nobel Peace Prize together if they could agree on something that should be easy to agree to, and it would be wonderful. “I think that clearly the two countries are going to compete in lots of ways, and this is going to be important socioeconomically, geopolitically they should be able to agree that no one should be taking a certain level of risk with the development process of this. And even if just the US and China could agree on some shared standards and testing for development of this technology, I think that’d be a wonderful accomplishment.”’
This statement from Sam Altman comes at a time when SU Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that AI companies must take responsibility when systems go rogue. He also clearly said that OpenAI management should be held responsible for what happened in the Hugging Face incident.
