OpenAI launched its flagship GPT-6 Astra AI earlier this month. Touting the Astra AI as the most intelligent and aligned model in the world, the company has now expanded its GPT-6 family with updated versions of Sol and Luna models. According to the tech firm, these new models offer some of the capabilities of Astra to a wider range of users at cheaper prices.
“GPT-6 Astra introduced a new generation of intelligence; these models extend its benefits by making that intelligence more efficient and accessible,” the company said in its announcement.
How Do GPT-6 Sol And Luna Work?
Sol and Luna are built for different types of tasks. OpenAI has positioned Sol as the more capable option for difficult tasks that includes coding and other works like deeper reasoning. Meanwhile, Luna is used for simpler and high-volume tasks where the goal is clearly set. For example, Luna is often used for summarising documents, extracting data or answering quick questions.
One of the biggest changes with the new models is their cost. OpenAI says GPT-6 Sol and Luna will be available through its API at 50% lower prices than the promotional pricing for GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna.
The company has attributed the lower prices to improvements in areas such as caching and inference. This could make the models more accessible to developers and businesses that use AI models at large scale. Notably, the lower cost is particularly relevant for applications that process large amounts of information or make frequent API calls.
OpenAI is also highlighting improvements in the reliability of its latest models. According to the company, GPT-6 Sol makes significantly fewer factual mistakes than its predecessor. “On our internal factuality evaluation, which is based on de-identified real-world conversations where users flagged mistakes by our models, GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor, reaching Astra-level reliability at much lower cost,” OpenAI said.
OpenAI Competes With Anthropic
As with several of its recent model launches, OpenAI is also comparing the new GPT-6 models with Anthropic’s offerings. The company says GPT-6 Sol and Luna can perform substantially better on a number of tasks than Anthropic’s leading models, including its Fable and Opus models.
The timing of the two companies’ releases has also highlighted the growing competition between them. Anthropic launched Opus 5.5 right 90 minutes before OpenAI announced its latest Sol and Luna models.
Who Can Use GPT-6 Sol And Luna
GPT-6 Sol and Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts, as well as through the ChatGPT API. Luna is also being made available through the desktop app and to Free and Go users.
OpenAI said the latest models will gradually reach ChatGPT users across its app and website throughout the day.
