After Australia, a new incident is making headlines where AI agents tried to breach a government website. According to Reuters citing a research firm, Transluce, AI agents have attempted to access a Canadian government website on two occasions. This raises fresh concerns over the risks posed by increasingly AI agents that can manage tasks on behalf of users with minimum human interference.
AI Agents Target Canadian Government Website
According to Transluce, the AI agents tried to get access to the Library and Archives Canada website during the two incidents. This development comes as AI agents are becoming more capable of carrying out attacks with limited human involvement. Unlike conventional chatbots, these systems can interact with websites, applications and other digital tools to complete tasks on behalf of users.
Transluce said it disclosed details of the suspected activity to Canadian authorities after identifying the incidents. Reportedly, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security said it was aware of reports about suspected activity involving AI agents.
However, Canadian officials said there was currently no indication that government systems had been compromised. The statement means that while the reported activity has raised cybersecurity concerns, there is no evidence at this stage that the AI agents successfully breached Canadian government systems.
This is apparently the second reported incident when AI agents tried to breach a government website. Recently, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that OpenAI’s AI agents hacked the country’s government health data portal in June.
Notably, the incident involved a portal which was operated by a government agency that provides health statistics and information. This includes data related to public healthcare spending. However, Australia officials said the portal does not include sensitive patient information.
As AI agents continue to advance, these incidents show how AI is emerging as a major risk for governments across the world.
