Samsung Exits TV And Home Appliance Sales Business In China: Here’s Why

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics is reportedly stepping away from its home appliance and TV sales business in China, according to a report by The Korea Times. The move comes as the company faces mounting pressure from local Chinese brands and rising operational costs in one of the world’s biggest consumer markets. As per the report, Samsung has already informed vendors in China about its decision to shut down these particular sales operations. However, the tech giant is not exiting the country entirely. Its smartphone, semiconductor and medical equipment businesses are expected to continue operating in the region.
Why Samsung Is Pulling Back
The decision appears to be linked to increasing competition and shrinking profitability. Chinese companies have rapidly strengthened their grip on the local home appliance and TV market, making it harder for foreign brands to maintain market share.
According to The Korea Times, Samsung’s sales unit in China posted a net profit of 168 billion won (around $116 million) last year. That’s a sharp drop compared to the 300 billion won profit it recorded the previous year.
The South Korea-based tech giant has also been dealing with broader global challenges, including tariff concerns and higher business costs. Earlier, Samsung reportedly said it was reviewing a larger business reorganisation strategy amid intensifying competition in the home appliance sector.
Big Changes Inside Samsung
Interestingly, the development comes just days after Samsung replaced its TV division head. The company, which still holds the position of the world’s top TV maker, is said to be restructuring internally to deal with growing challenges both in domestic and international markets. While Samsung hasn’t officially announced a full withdrawal from China, this latest step clearly signals a major shift in strategy for the company in the region.
