Britain’s King Charles has warned AI leaders about the serious risks of AI falling into the wrong hands. Speaking to executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic and other technology companies on Thursday, the King said stronger safety measures were needed before it becomes ‘too late’.
According to Reuters, King Charles said AI developers themselves are raising concerns about the future capabilities of the technology, including the possibility of AI being used to cause serious harm.
“Those who have created these technologies are now increasingly warning that AI risks developing darker capacities – perhaps even to take life,” the King was quoted as saying.
He also mentioned the risk of AI being misused in ways that could have catastrophic consequences. According to the King, there is an urgent need to understand these dangers and ensure that advanced AI systems are developed with proper safeguards.
“In this regard, if I may say so, there seems urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways,”he said.
King Charles also reminded AI companies that their responsibility is not limited to developing more powerful technology. He said the industry must ensure that AI continues to benefit people, communities and the natural world.
His comments come at at time when AI companies are in question for developing increasingly capable AO models that could change the way people work, communicate and use technology. Also, concerns around AI safety and the misuse of advanced systems have become an important part of the global discussion.
While artificial intelligence could bring major benefits, the possibility of powerful systems being used for harmful purposes remains a concern for governments, researchers and technology companies.
The focus now is on making sure AI continues to serve humanity while reducing the risks that could come with its growing capabilities.
