Perplexity had a slow impact in the last few months because the competition started moving way too fast as we got to see some iconic development from the like of OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Now, Perplexity AI has also introduced a new concept that could turn a small desktop computer into a constantly running AI-based employee. Also known as Perplexity Personal Computer, the system has been designed to run on a nearby machine like the Mac Mini. The setup will let the AI remain active on the computer and interact with files, apps, and tasks in real time.
The idea is based on the previously introduced Perplexity Computer platform. It works like a manager for multiple AI agents. As for its working, when a user gives it a goal, the system breaks the work into smaller tasks and assigns them to different AI agents. As soon as the work is done in the background, the results are combined and presented back to the user.

And because the same runs on a device like a Mac Mini, the system can access files stored on the computer and perform tasks that involve personal data. For example, if someone has a folder of images and wants them prepared for a website, the AI could analyse the photos, rename them in a structured format and resize them for online use. The user will only be supposed to describe the outcome instead of manually organising everything. Now, just to let you know, all the sensitive actions will require approval, activity logs will be available, and users will also have a kill switch to disable the system if required.
Coming to the part why Mac Mini was used in the process, so the device is becoming a household name among developers who run experiments with locally hosted AI systems. Compared to more powerful machines like the Mac Studio, the compact computer provides a cheaper way to operate light AI tools.
